Breaking stereotypes, one sparkle at a timeJanuary 6, 2021: "Breaking stereotypes, one sparkle at a time" focuses on Steve Olin, owner of Studio 17, a local piercing and tattoo studio in Holland, Michigan. My intent with the article was to shine a light on a local business and the passionate owner behind it.
Often, piercers and tattoo artists are profiled with negative stereotypes that are simply not true. This article gave me a chance to explore those stereotypes and tell Olin's story. Awards: 2021 Division 1 MIPA Personality Profile 3rd place |
Elizabeth Fris; Back home at WOMarch 12, 2021: "Elizabeth Fris; Back home at WO" follows swim coach, Elizabeth Fris in her swimming journey. She began as a swimmer in West Ottawa's age group program and quickly progressed. Years later, Fris returns to West Ottawa as an elementary teacher and a coach in West Ottawa's USA swim program.

A Hoosier for lifeJanuary 7, 2022: "A Hoosier for life" features Jamesohn Bader, an alumni from my school. After graduating from West Ottawa, Bader attended Indiana University and was hired as a basketball manager.
This story focuses on a single message: you can succeed anywhere as long as you put in the effort to succeed. At first Bader was unsure of his decision to attend IU. However, today he describes himself as a "Hoosier for life" due to his determination to succeed. |
The snowmelt system: Bringing the community of Holland together during the winterFebruary 18, 2021: In this article, I took a deeper look into one of Holland, Michigan's most attractive features; the snowmelt system. While working deep below residents' feet, the snowmelt system plays a large role in preserving the Holland community over winter.
This year, I had the opportunity to edit down this article and publish it in Lakeside Living, a local magazine. Lakeside Living is distributed to families all throughout Holland. This was a great opportunity because I got to learn the steps of publishing an article in a magazine format. |
